The entire process involved in asphalt road construction is very complicated. People usually consider that while installing a new driveway, the team of professionals usually roll the paving material and deposited by the huge trucks. But, the reality is different.
There are various steps involved before the passing of the big rolling machine. All Civil Construction services providers have to follow a specific technique while paving a new road or resurfacing an old pavement. It is imperative to follow a perfect technique to make sure that you have good quality results.
Steps Involved In Asphalt Road Construction
The different construction projects involved different process, therefore, all projects do not require to perform all the below mentioned steps.
Also, some of the road construction projects need more tools from the paving contractor. But, here we are going to discuss a few steps that are necessary to perform most asphalt construction processes.
1. Pavement Design
The paving contractor has to consider the amount of weight that pavement has to bear. Here, the weight of various vehicles has to be considered.
Also, the paving contractor has to evaluate the condition of the soil and the type of terrain where you are going to construct a road pavement.
2. Create A Plan
After considering the soil condition and weight of pavement that a road has to bear, now the paving contractor will make a perfect plan.
While creating a plan, the contractor has to consider various traffic control systems, the time when the raw material and necessary equipment will arrive at the site and the workforce required to complete the project.
Now, the paving contractor will divide the whole process into some logical and optimum stages.
3. Clearing The Road
If the project involves the construction of a new road, then it is imperative to clear the bushes, plants, trees and other forms of vegetation to carry out the road construction process.
But, if this project involves reconstruction of the asphalt road, then it is important to remove the old pavement.
4. Start Grading Process
The drainage system plays an important role while constructing an asphalt road. It is important to create a proper slope over the pavement to ensure that water not accumulated over the road.
The pavement should be slightly higher from the center and it is important to use heavy equipment to shape the roadbed slightly in a downward direction from the edges.
After that, the team members take the help of some kind of machinery and hand tools for surface leveling.
5. Construct A Strong Foundation
The entire pavement is comprised of a subbase and base. The subterranean drainage forms an important part in the asphalt pavement. The strong foundation plays an important role to maintain the strength and support system of this road pavement.
The different foundations will have different designs and that is dependent on various factors such as type of soil, planned usage and so on. Also, the design of the foundation is based on the material selected by the contractor.
6. Apply The Courses Layer
When the paving has checked the entire sub base to make sure that the foundation has appropriate compaction and grade, then he can move on to the binder layer process. The next stage is the application of the first asphalt course and compact that layer.
The number, of course, applied to form a strong foundation varies. Finally, when the adequate amount of courses is applied, then the final session is the surface layer. Usually, asphalt contractor uses smaller aggregate particles to form the last layer.
Process Involved In Forming An Overlay–
The overlay installation process does not require much time and also it is a pocket-friendly technique. But, there are some pavements where the overlay technique will not work.
For instance, if we consider the case of a foundation that is an unstable or a huge amount of alligator cracking, then reconstruction plays an imperative role.
Various steps are involved in the overlay installing process such as:
- First of all, the pavement contractor will inspect this pavement to identify the causes of road damage. If the main causes of damage are not identified, then the overlay will suffer once again.
- The paving contractor will do several tests to determine the condition of the foundation.
- The next stage is clearing the road. In this step. It is the responsibility of team members to remove the old pavement and vegetation grown over the road and in its surroundings.
- Also, it is imperative to do some necessary repairs before installing the overlay. For instance, it is important to fill the deep ruts to maintain the optimum new surface level.
After applying new material, it is required to compact it and apply the seal coat.
