During pregnancy, it is estimated that you will experience pain. But if the pain and discomfort becomes something more serious, it’s important to control possible inflammation of the pelvic nerve.
Severe leg pain can be caused by a condition called sciatica. This condition is quite common during pregnancy and although it is considered to be quite painful, it can be treated effectively.
Sciatica Nerve Pain during Pregnancy
The sciatic nerve is described as the nerve responsible for sending signals from the foot to the brain. This nerve is responsible for the movement functions of the lower body. These nerves run from the lower back and descend from the back of the foot to the toes.
The sciatic nerve becomes the largest nerve in the body and during the journey to the feet, is located under the uterus. When the nerves become inflamed, it causes leg pain. This pain can range from mild to severe depending on the severity of the inflammation.
Sciatica pain during pregnancy is described as a tingling, invulnerability, or pain like a stab that begins in the lower back or buttocks and then descends to the back of the leg. During the third trimester and when the baby begins to move to the birth position, the pressure can cause inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is not considered dangerous during pregnancy, but it is still classified as an uncomfortable and painful condition.
You will feel burning pain that comes and goes and is often felt on one side. You may feel pain in your lower back, the back of your thighs, and the back of your feet to your feet. You may also feel a burning or tingling sensation in your feet and invulnerability or stings in your legs.
The pain can only be in certain areas or spread. Sciatica can be very serious and cause constant pain compared to back pain.
Although this condition will go away on its own, there are many ways to reduce the pain for a short time. Experts say people with sciatica should maintain a standard level of activity and try to focus on exercise to improve circulation. It will also help build your lower back muscles when you try basic exercises.

Consult your doctor or midwife and ask for a referral for a musculoskeletal therapist. Ask if you need to meet a physio specialist in women’s health. Your therapist will show you exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, and back. He or she may also recommend the use of a pregnancy support belt, which fits under the belly and around the back.
Therapists must also monitor and control the function of their nerves during pregnancy. Make sure to visit trained and licensed professionals, ideally choose a therapist experienced in treating pregnant women. You can also consult a doctor if you choose medical treatment.
To reduce sudden pain from sciatica, it is recommended to apply hot or cold compresses to the lower back to relieve symptoms. If you choose a warm compress, make sure you don’t make it too hot and cause burns and make things worse. Other treatment options can be swimming, acupuncture therapy or massage therapy.
If you suffer from sciatica during pregnancy, try to get enough rest and reduce heavy work. You can also lie on the painless side to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Sciatica pain during pregnancy is a painful condition that is unfortunately more common than we thought. But by trying more of these methods, you can reduce the pain and symptoms of sciatica.
Half of people with sciatica recover in 6 weeks and almost all (90%) recover in 12 weeks. But for some people, the symptoms may be felt longer. The positions you can use during labor may be limited due to your sciatica, so consult your doctor.
If you suffer from severe sciatica during pregnancy, it will likely remain until your baby is 6 months old. As with other back problems, watch your posture. When breastfeeding, sit with your back straight. Raise the baby to the chest using a pillow and keep the feet flat on the floor.
Put baby’s clothes or diapers back on the changing table, not on the floor. When lifting the baby, keep your back straight, bend your knees and avoid circular movements.
Ask your midwife what types of sports you can do to improve your body’s fitness, strength and flexibility. This will help prevent your problem from lasting.
Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, can actually reduce sciatica, but your doctor may advise against taking it during pregnancy. Some other tips you can try to relieve sciatica complaints:
- Wear flat, soft shoes. This can help prevent tremors in the spine when you walk. Or you can help by wearing shoes with small heels.
- Take care of your posture and try to keep your back slightly bent. When you are sitting, use a small pillow or rolled towel on your back to support your spine.
- Avoid lifting heavy weights, if you have to lift something, bend your knees and keep your back straight.
- Listen to your body and stop when you feel pain.
- Keep moving, try not to sit still for long periods.
- Use pillows to support the body in bed.
