Andy Horner from West Yorkshire is appalled that people in the UK are saying they’re mentally sick simply to claim payment advantages. In an interview with us Andy Horner (Anxious Andy) stated “people are going to extreme lengths to claim these advantages, I’ve met people who’ve informed me they are not mentally sick but are going to the doctors to get antidepressants so they can use this as proof for applying for PIP (personal independent) I’ve battled with anxiety and depression from childhood and I genuinely need the help and guidance and support. I have been in and out of psychiatric hospitals and have and still am under mental health services. I take medication and I’m closely monitored by my GP and have had intense therapy.
I suppose there may be still a long way to move on breaking the stigma, you can’t simply tell through looking at a person that they’re mentally sick. It’s very complicated. We have such a variety of mental illness, I assume GPs are too quick to just hand out medication than get to the root of the problem, they simply don’t have the time. We need extra care in the community, help and less difficulty to access services for the ones who are really sick and want or need the help.
I suppose a more thorough research needs to occur while people are applying for these forms of advantages due to the fact that at the moment it appears to be assessed more on how you look on the outside and what you tell the assessor rather than looking deeper into each person.
I realize that genuine people that are struggling don’t obtain any advantages and others who are not ill obtain them. It’s all incorrect and this needs to change.
